School Curriculum

The Green Hedges academic program is inspired by the notion of a classical education. This educational approach focuses on teaching students how to think rather than only having them internalize an established core of required information. A classical education presents specific developmental stages that influence curriculum design. The earliest years of schooling are dedicated to providing students with a foundation for future learning through the introduction of essential skills and knowledge. With this base, students are then able to explore more abstract questions inherent in a study of both historical and contemporary culture, as our academic program embodies both rational thought and enduring topics which transcend time and place. Ultimately, students utilize the critical thinking skills fostered by our classical education throughout the remainder of their academic, professional, and personal lives.
Traditionally, classical education has focused on a liberal arts program that includes a specific range of disciplines. Green Hedges has personalized this approach by providing a more comprehensive educational experience. We believe that foreign languages, the arts, and physical education are essential complements to a challenging program in the core subjects of math, science, language arts, and social studies. We also seek to connect the content across disciplines, further strengthening childrens understanding of the ideas and concepts introduced in our program. Furthermore, ours is a spiral curriculum whereby students see similar ideas and information in new and advancing forms across disciplines and grade levels.
Green Hedges curriculum is built upon the fundamental belief that it is possible to challenge children while maintaining a supportive environment. Healthy student-teacher relationships and interactions are key to this belief, and our small class sizes allow for close monitoring of student performance and prompt intervention when needed. We believe educating children is a shared endeavor between home and school and our teachers communicate regularly with our parents regarding school achievement and the overall experience of the students.
We are pleased to share brief summaries of the Green Hedges School curriculum by division. The School is currently engaged in a curriculum mapping activity. This process involves recording the specific content, skills, and assessment devices introduced or utilized across the year in each grade level. Once we have entered sufficient data, we look forward to publishing this material on our web site. In the meantime, please contact the respective teachers for more specific information regarding class content.
