Admission-FAQ

The admission process begins the fall before your child would enter Green Hedges. We begin scheduling tours in October. For a complete Admission Office calendar, please see Admission Office Calendar.

Yes. Applications and all supporting paperwork should be submitted no later than February 15. Applications received after the deadline will be processed and considered on a space available basis.

Yes. Campus tours are given at 9:00 a.m. every Wednesday, October through April. If you cannot attend the Wednesday morning tour, please call the Admission Office to schedule a more convenient time. All families are encouraged, though not required, to tour the School and talk with the Director of Admission. We want all parents to make the most informed decision regarding their child’s education, and this visit allows for the best understanding of Green Hedges, our mission, and our rich program.

Yes. Green Hedges embraces the diversity that characterizes and strengthens our community. To support this commitment, we provide financial aid to families in an effort to balance our student body, support enrollment objectives, and meet the financial needs of qualified students who cannot afford full tuition costs.
Parents seeking financial aid must file (online) a Financial Aid for Student Tuition (FAST) application with Independent School Management (ISM) by February 28. For consideration of aid, a request letter must be mailed to the GHS Financial Aid Committee in an envelope marked "CONFIDENTIAL" and be accompanied by a copy of the FAST information, federal income tax forms and schedules or profit/loss statements for self-employed individuals, W-2 forms, the student's federal income tax forms (if filed), and IRS Form 4506. For more information, please see Financial Aid.

No. Green Hedges School accepts students based on academic merit, test scores, references, and personal qualities. Financial aid files are reviewed and awards made only after a student is admitted, however, financial aid requests must be made by the February 28 deadline in order for an award to be considered.

Yes. Green Hedges School is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) and is affiliated with the American Montessori Society (AMS). We are also members of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the National Middle School Association (NMSA), the Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington (AISGW), and the Washington Small Schools Association (WSSA).

Yes. Children must be three-years-old by September 30 and toilet trained to enter the Montessori program. At the discretion of the school, and on a space available basis, applicants who do not meet the age criteria may be considered for mid-year enrollment on or after July 1.

Children may successfully enter the program at ages four and five if they have the ability to interact positively with others, an appropriate degree of self-control, listening skills, and a willingness to learn.

No testing is required for children applying to the Montessori Program. Children applying for Grade 1 and up are required to have the WISC-I-III WISC-IV or the WISC-IV Integrated assessment.

Green Hedges School accepts children who are motivated and able to learn, will benefit from our comprehensive curriculum, and embrace the School’s Mission and Core Values.

Parents wishing to apply for their child’s admission should:

  • Submit a completed application and the $75 application fee to the Admission Office.
  • Complete age-appropriate recommendation forms. Parents should give the recommendation forms to the child’s present teachers and request that the completed forms be sent directly to Green Hedges.
  • Schedule an assessment, if applicable, at a professional evaluation center.
  • Schedule an appointment with the Admission Office for the child’s classroom visit.
  • Arrange for the child’s present school to mail an official transcript of grades and test scores for the current and previous years to the Admission Office.

Green Hedges seeks to admit students who will be successful in our program. Admission is based upon academic records, recommendation statements, formal assessment results, and a personal interview. The student assessment visit, which assesses developmental readiness, academic aptitude, behavioral matters, and work habits at age appropriate levels, also informs the School’s decision. Green Hedges School does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion, or national origin in the administration of its educational policies.

Admission decisions are made when the entire application process has been completed. Letters of notification will be mailed on or before March 10. Financial Aid awards are made on or before April 1.

Qualified applicants receive either an offer of enrollment or an offer in the qualified wait pool. A wait pool letter signifies that the applicant met all admission requirements but has applied to a grade where not enough spaces are available to accommodate the number of qualified applicants. If the Admission Committee finds, in their opinion, that Green Hedges is not a good match for an applicant at the time of application, the applicant receives a letter of denial.

Yes! Each year some students are accepted from the wait pool. Movement from the wait pool most often occurs before June 1, but can happen up to the first day of school. The admission office welcomes contact from wait pool families seeking status updates throughout the spring and summer.

At Green Hedges, students’ clothing should reflect the importance of school and should not distract from the learning environment. All students are expected to arrive at school in clothing that is neat, clean, and appropriate as this helps foster pride in one’s appearance and contributes to an orderly and attractive school environment. To assist parents and children in selecting appropriate attire, the Green Hedges dress code establishes division-specific standards for dress. These standards honor the important work the children engage in on a daily basis. Please download our full uniform policy (PDF) for more information.
