Carolyn Wood, Grade One

A turning point in Carolyn Wood’s life took place in high school, when a gifted teacher opened her eyes to the world of psychology and to the understanding of profoundly different perspectives that people bring to what seems a shared reality. It was a realization that added wisdom to her natural warmth. Another turning point came when, having graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with a BS in education and a Minor in Psychology, and having taught in a number of different settings, she moved to this area and found Green Hedges School, a setting she describes as matching in feel the atmosphere created in the Little House on the Prairie books that she used to read late into the night under the covers as a child. As she puts it, “Green Hedges matches that community feel, but in a present day way, with the advantages of all the modern teaching tools.” Ms. Wood, who is teaching Grade 1 with Sherry Dart, spends time away from Green Hedges playing soccer and doing community service projects with her husband, Scott, including one recent church service trip to Ethiopia.
