Maria Zita Gray

Maria Zita Gray, Lower and Middle School Science
Two inspiring high school science teachers, both women, one in chemistry and one in physics, brought to full fire the sparks of interest in science that were part of Ms. Gray’s earlier schooling. She comes from a small town in the Philippines, where the opportunities to do lab work were few at first. Fortunately, high school offered more such chances, and she received a college scholarship from the Netherlands government that helped her to continue her studies. Ms. Gray taught science for six years in the Philippines, in a traditional high school and in an IB program, and then moved to this area to teach at an international school in DC. In her fourth year at Green Hedges, she remembers how warm and welcoming the community was to her as a newcomer. Now inspiring another generation of students, she says, “When students experience a thrill in discovery, the possibilities are endless.”
