Sherry Dart, Grade One
A neighbor of Green Hedges now in her 29th year teaching Grade 1 at the School, Master Teacher Sherry Dart is not only a link to the school’s founders and history, but also a continuing inspiration to generations of students and families. “Childhood is precious time,” she says, “and it is short.” She does not say these words with sentimentality, but rather with a tone of utter respect for the inner lives of her students. The daughter of a teacher who inspired love of poetry in her children, Ms. Dart received her degree in Elementary Education, and one in Early Childhood Education, a new degree at the time, from Georgia Southern University. Her Master’s degree in Education is from the University of Georgia. One of a pilot group of teachers who established the Head Start program, nowadays she tends to the metamorphosis of children each year in the same way they tend to the magic of emerging butterflies in her classroom, with care and attention.
