Stacey Vagoun, Grade Five
Grade 5 class is the transition between relatively self-contained classrooms and the freedom and responsibilities of Middle School. Ms. Vagoun, who teaches this grade, uses the year to inculcate in her students attitudes and skills that will stand them in good stead throughout their academic careers. “For example, I teach them how to take notes, then I tell them to take notes during my Math lessons and to refer to those notes when they do their homework. At first they don’t understand the importance of doing what seems like extra work, but after a while, they realize it.” Ms. Vagoun was born in Kansas and matriculated from Boston University with a degree in Communications. After graduation she worked in a non-profit with low income children and did service work with Literacy Volunteers of America. It was her four-year teaching relationship with an adult who could not read but who had many other competencies that eventually inspired her to become teacher. Ms. Vagoun went on to receive a Master of Science Degree in Education from Johns Hopkins University, working at the Lab School in DC part time. She came to Green Hedges where she has taught in Grades 2,3,4, and 5. This is her eighth year at GHS, the second working full time, her third taking the additional role of Language Arts Coordinator. She has two sons, Max, 7, and Ryan, 4, a member of Ms. Nichol’s Montessori class.
