Syamala Chenulu, Middle School Mathematics

With the warmth of a grandmother, the incisive mind of a scientist, and the charm of a cosmopolitan woman steeped in the arts, Ms. Chenulu teaches math in a way that draws out the curiosity and aptitudes of students. She credits her mother, who was the first woman electrical engineer in India, for her scientific interests. Having earned two degrees in Science and Education in her native country, Ms. Chenulu taught in India for thirty years and also participated in many volunteer activities, including working with Mother Theresa. After moving to the United States in 1979, she taught math at several schools in the DC area before coming to Green Hedges four years ago. While her husband writes memoirs and her grown children enjoy science careers of their own, Ms. Chenulu delights in bringing math to life for students.
