Green Hedges’ believes the home-school partnership is crucial and provides parents, as well as their children, a rich and rewarding experience. Throughout the year,
there are a variety of avenues for parents to be involved in the community to the benefit of one’s self and others. This allows parents to meet other fellow parents and become an active part of school life. There are occasions to meet every interest and availability.
Each class is assigned a Room Parent (RP) who serves as a mentor to new families as well as a liaison to school happenings.
The RP, in concert with the Room Parent Coordinator (RPC), Director of Development and Director of Admission, is happy to offer guidance as to the myriad of volunteer opportunities. Most parents find themselves helping with classroom, PTO and/or Auction activities. Get involved as much as you can as your gift of time and talent enriches the overall Green Hedges’ educational experience for all our students.
Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO)
The Green Hedges School Parent-Teacher Organization is composed of all parents, administrators, and teachers in the school community. The PTO promotes a sense of community and school spirit through numerous events and programs.
The PTO raises monies primarily through the sale of milk and lunch programs (pizza, wraps, subs, etc.), voluntary dues, and other fundraising events. These monies support professional development opportunities for Green Hedges faculty, provide “wish list” items for the classrooms, support cultural assemblies for students and social events for the school community.
The PTO is run by parent volunteers with oversight from the Director of Development and the Board of Trustees. The PTO Executive Committee is comprised of a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and new this year, the room parent coordinator. The PTO divides its efforts among various committees, and then the related, specific tasks are performed by the various committee chairs and interested volunteers.

The PTO relies on volunteers. Parents are encouraged to contact their Room Parent (RP) or a PTO Officer to learn more about opportunities to participate. Each family is asked to consider volunteering for at least two (2) activities throughout the year. Volunteer opportunities are regularly posted in WAAG (Friday e-newsletter sent to families) and sign-up sheets are available at several September school gatherings.

Green Hedges’ Gala~Auction is the major fundraising and social event of the year. Proceeds from the event provide significant enhancements to school programs and serve as an important revenue stream in the operating budget.
Over the past decade, the auction has raised close to $1 million, with proceeds used to renovate the Middle School science lab; enable faculty to build comprehensive classroom libraries for their students; provide stage, sound and lighting enhancements in the Multi-Purpose Room as well as resources for the foreign language department; and contribute to the school’s operating budget. The auction’s long-standing success is due in great part to the incredible volunteer efforts from year to year.
The auction is a great community-building event. Parents have fun working together to achieve a successful fundraiser and fun social outing. Support and participation comes from the entire community in the form of volunteer time, donations of goods and services and cash contributions. Whether you’re able to chair a committee, enter data from the comfort of home, help set up a hallway display or volunteer to sell raffle tickets one morning during drop-off, there are jobs both big and small to make the event a continued success.
The 2012 Gala-Auction is set for Friday, March 9 at The Atrium at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. This year’s event will feature a cocktail-party atmosphere with butlered hors d’oeuvres and desserts in addition to sumptuous food stations. All parents are encouraged to attend, and are welcome to bring extended family and/or friends. Tickets are $85 per person. Invitations will be sent in late January with responses due by February 24.
