Building Community
At Green Hedges we believe in building a strong school community. Throughout the school year, Green Hedges offers a variety of events and activities that encourage family participation and foster healthy relationships. We hope you are able to join us at many of the following annual favorites.
Potluck Supper
The Potluck Supper, sponsored by the PTO, kicks off the social events for the year. Families are encouraged to bring a favorite dish and their appetites as we gather together to dine and converse with friends.
Benefit Concert
The Benefit Concert brings professional musicians to the Green Hedges stage for an evening of music. Our families have the opportunity to hear an outstanding concert, and our students have the opportunity to perform on the same stage with professional musicians. Proceeds from the concert support our music program.
Halloween Parade
The Vienna Halloween Parade takes places each October, and the Green Hedges community comes out in full force. Parents join a brigade of witches, wizards, princesses, and, as was the case in 2003, firefighters, fire trucks, and Percival the Dragon, to march down Maple Avenue behind the Green Hedges banner amid a festive atmosphere of giggles, cheers, hellos, and waves. Our creative costumes and enthusiastic marching garnered us first place in the student division in October 2003.
Green Hedges Eatery Night
From time to time, we arrange a Green Hedges Night at local eateries where families can enjoy a meal and socialize with friends. Green Hedges families have recently sampled the fare at the Vienna Inn (known for its fries and chili dogs!) and Foster's Grille (the best hamburgers ever!).
Green Hedges Auction
The Green Hedges Auction is the major fund-raising and social event of the year. This event occurs in the spring and proceeds from the event have helped make significant improvements to the campus and enhancements to school programs. Recent auction proceeds allowed the School to purchase new playground equipment and the AppleCart, a portable, networked computer lab. All members of the Green Hedges community are encouraged to contribute to the auction as a sponsor, an advertiser, or a donor, and everyone is invited to the festive affair.
Family Fun Day
Family Fun Day occurs annually in the spring. This day features fun and festive games and activities for the children, delicious food, Karoke singing, and other surprises. The entire school community looks forward to this rite of spring.
Grandparents & Founders Day
Grandparents play an important role in the lives of their grandchildren and in our school, and each year we invite them, or special friends, for a day filled with classroom visits, student performances, and photographs with their grandchildren. To provide the most enjoyable visit for our Grandparents, Green Hedges has now combined our traditional Grandparents Day with Founders Day. This event, held in May, honors Frances and Kenton Kilmer, Green Hedges' founders, and showcases our students' artistic expression. All members of the school community are invited to attend the celebration which features Green Hedges students in a program of singing, drama, poetry, and studio art. The celebration culminates with the May Pole Dance performed by Grade 3 students.
Please see our School Calendar for other exciting events.
