Afternoon Preschool, Extended Day & After School Activities

Afternoon Programs

Green Hedges offers structured afternoon programs, beginning at 12 noon for Preschool students and 3:30 p.m. for Kindergarten-Grade 8 students. Parents may enroll their child for the entire year or customize their child’s schedule on a drop in basis. The Program is divided into three components shown below in the fees schedule. In its approach, the program strives to be an extension of each child’s experience as a GHS student.

Afternoon Preschool: 12 noon to 3:30 p.m.

The Afternoon Preschool program from 12 noon – 3:30 offers students, who are not yet age-eligible (as defined by the Commonwealth of Virginia) for our Montessori Kindergarten program, the opportunity to continue their learning experience in the afternoon. This program is designed to extend the learning day and to vertically align the afternoon curriculum with the educational, social, and emotional developmental needs of our youngest students. The program provides a structured educational environment where theme-based learning, literature, art, creative play, and music activities foster growth and development following a similar structure to the morning Montessori program.

Extended Day: 3:30 to 6:00 p.m.

Green Hedges also offers an Extended Day Program for all students from 3:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. This program is responsive to the varying tempo of the afternoon, and thus offers a broad range of activities including a supervised study hall, indoor/outdoor play, and the opportunity to join clubs, and participate in sports programs.

Note: On days when general dismissal occurs at 12 noon, Afternoon Preschool and Extended Day are available from 12 noon – 6:00 p.m. for a limited number of registered students. Homework supervision and quiet educational and play activities are provided.

After School Activities

During the year, Green Hedges School offers a variety of other after-school activities, open to various groups of students, in three eight- or ten-week sessions.  In the past, these activities have included Zumba Dance, soccer, Abrakadoodle, basketball, fencing, jewelry making, and Dragon RunHers, among others. Information on these After School Programs is shared in WAAG and other communications, generally one month prior to the beginning of each program session.

Winter Break & Spring Break Camps

Staffed by our own faculty, Green Hedges School offers a safe and play-based camp program for students during the longer school vacation periods.  Rates and sign-up information are distributed approximately one month in advance of the camp.
