From the moment you step onto the Green Hedges campus, you will witness the strong sense of community that exists here. We provide children a safe, secure environment while maintaining a commitment to the charming, family-friendly community so often found in a neighborhood school.
The Montessori 2-year old Program at Green Hedges primarily focuses on developing independence, fine-tuning gross and fine motor skills, enhancing social skills, practicing Grace and Courtesy, and developing positive interactions with others for our youngest learners. There is so much development that happens at this age and our Montessori program provides a nurturing and safe environment in which to do so. The application process is as follows:
1. Visit Campus (Optional)
While a campus tour is not required we do highly encourage interested parents to schedule a tour with the admission office or attend an admission open house held several times a year in the fall and winter.
2. Submit Application
Your child’s application and a $75 non-refundable application fee must be submitted online. Please begin by submitting an online inquiry and check the box to indicate you are ready to complete an Application. Your inquiry data will be transferred to the Application form.
Preschool and Kindergarten children ages 3, 4 and 5 are placed in our three Montessori classrooms and spend three years with their Montessori Directress. Applicants must turn three by September 30 and be bathroom independent. However, we may have an opening for a mid-year admission candidate if developmentally appropriate. While Montessori is a three year cycle, we do accept 4 and 5 year old applicants if space allows and encourage interested families to apply.

3) Student Assessment Visit
Applicants for the Preschool and Kindergarten programs spend 45 minutes – 1 hour working on lessons with one of our Montessori Directresses to assess readiness, motivation to learn in the Montessori classroom, and peer interaction. Assessments are generally scheduled in the morning December – February and are arranged through the admission office.
4) Online Teacher Recommendation
A recommendation from the applicant’s current teacher is required through our online admission portal which you will have access to during the application process. Teacher recommendations are confidential and must be submitted online. We use the AISGW common recommendation form. For processing during our preferred admission cycle teachers have until the end of February to submit their evaluation. If your child does not currently attend school please submit the form to someone who knows your child. For example: a dance or art teacher, church, synagogue, or daycare center leader.
5) Submit Request for Records to Current School (if applicable)
School transcripts request through our online admission portal. For processing during our preferred admission cycle schools have until the end of February to submit student records/transcripts.
Students entering Grades 1-5 join a classroom that averages 16-18 students with two full time lead teachers in Grades 1-3. Middle School faculty team teach Science and Mathematics with the Grade 4 or 5 home room teacher as the children prepare to transition to Middle School.

3) Student Assessment Visit
Applicants to Grades 1-5 will spend one day on campus with their current grade level getting to know their peers and experiencing a morning or full day at Green Hedges. Applicants will be assessed by our faculty in mathematics, reading and writing. Grades 1-2 applicants spend the morning on campus and Grades 3-5 stay for the school day. Visits occur December – February and are scheduled through our admission office.
4) WPPSI-IV or WISC-V Testing
Testing should be scheduled at an off campus evaluation center. Children 5-years-old and under should take the WPPSI (Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence). Children 6-years-old or older should take the WISC-V (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children). Appointments are most available in the fall than the winter, so please schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Green Hedges does not endorse a particular testing center but the admission office will provide a list of nearby centers if desired.

As students move from fifth to sixth grade, the program shifts from self-contained classrooms to a departmental structure and grade-level advisor groups.

The regular application deadline is February 15.
Rolling admission begins in April for the coming school year after the regular decision admission process is complete. Please contact the admission office to inquire about available spaces in your child’s grade level.
In accordance with the guidelines established by the Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington (AISGW), parents are notified of the Admission Committee’s decision no earlier than March 1. Enrollment Contracts accompanied by a $1500 deposit are due to Green Hedges on March 15 to secure your child’s space.
