From the moment you step onto the Green Hedges campus, you will witness the strong sense of community that exists here. We provide children a safe, secure environment while maintaining a commitment to the charming, family-friendly community so often found in a neighborhood school.
Philanthropy Associate Anna Shaw has been part of Green Hedges since 2010, when her family numbered two children. Her family, and involvement with the school have grown: the family now includes four children–two alums and two current students—and she has served as Room Parent, President of the Parent Association, Board of Trustees member, and long-term substitute. Her husband Michael has also been a member of the Board of Trustees. “This is a school that beautifully supports children with different personality styles and interests, where character education is important, where every adult knows each child,” she says appreciatively.
The Philanthropy Associate position lets Ms. Shaw combine her loves of writing and community with her interest in education. “Strengthening our connections with alumni is a focus for me,” she says, adding that she supports other aspects of philanthropy, as well.
Ms. Shaw earned a BA in English and Media Arts & Design from James Madison University and an M. Ed, Curriculum & Instruction, Secondary Ed., from George Mason University. She subsequently worked as Assistant Editor for the Times Community Papers, Reston; as a business writer and as Conference Coordinator/Copyeditor for the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and has taught English for Speakers of Other Languages to Middle School students.
The Shaw family lives in Vienna and spends part of each summer in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. As befits a lifelong avid reader, Mrs. Shaw usually brings more than one book along.
