Jacob Hutzler

Technology Teacher

There is a hint of the magician in Technology Teacher Jake Hutzler as he describes the creative and intellectual adventures he guides in CAD, computer aided design. The program he uses is “attainable even for very young kids to use, because it’s drag and drop to put shapes together,” he says as he describes an early project that has students designing custom nametags for themselves that become free-standing objects thanks to a 3D printer.

Later projects, like creating chess pieces, build on the growing skills and confidence of students. “The more they get used to using the CAD, the more they begin to come up with their own ideas for useful things to create,” he says. “Giving them the skills to design from scratch, and then materialize that design in the world, is exciting,” he adds, noting that subsequent, more sophisticated CAD suites, robotics, and coding build on these skills.

Mr. Hutzler’s fascination with technology started early, and by high school he was discovering the immense possibilities of 3D printing. Sharing his infectious enthusiasm as a STEAM instructor (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) at summer camps, he subsequently became school manager and flight instructor for an ultralight aircraft company. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Vermont in Burlington.

Having relocated to the DC area from Florida, proud parents Jake and Bethany enjoy showing the sights to their baby girl and being closer to local family, which includes Jake’s dad, IT Administrator Carl Hutzler.
